Although the African continent is known to host some of the world’s richest mineral deposit districts, its mineral resource potential remains poorly explored. The immensity of the exploration potential is well illustrated by the number of significant discoveries in recent years. Furthermore, the origin of the ore deposits of many of the world-class mineral districts in Africa remains enigmatic, including the Au-U deposits of the Witwatersrand (South Africa), the Cu-Co deposits of the Central African Copperbelt (DRC, Zambia), as well as the PGE, Cr and V resources of the Bushveld Complex (South Africa) and the Great Dyke (Zimbabwe). Many of the important mineral deposit districts on the African continent are thus the subject of ongoing intensive research efforts. Much of this research is carried out by universities and research organizations that are not located on the African continent – and results obtained are often not effectively disseminated to researchers and scholars in countries where the investigated mineral deposit is actually located. The proposed session aims to bring together a community of researchers that focus on the mineralogy and geochemistry of mineral deposits on the African continent. Particular focus will be placed on the effective participation of researchers from African countries.
